How common is asbestos?
Asbestos is a natural occurring mineral that was used extensively in the U.S. in many construction materials. Use has decreased significantly over the years, but there are still building materials produced today that contain asbestos.
Protecting public health
When asbestos-containing material is disturbed and improperly handled, tiny hazardous fibers are released into the air and may cause lung cancer and other illnesses.
There’s no known safe level of exposure.
DEQ regulates the handling, removal and disposal of asbestos-containing material to protect public health and the environment.
All asbestos requirements are detailed in Oregon Administrative Rules 340, Division 248
